| If there’s one area where communication on paint jobs tends to waver, it’s on estimating trim and accent colors. At the time of estimating a paint job, it’s very common for the client to only have a general idea of how trim and accents will be painted.
The more clear you can be when you ask us to estimate, the less chance of change orders that can increase the cost of your project later on.
Exterior Paint Projects
A typical exterior three-color paint job has:
- One body color (the vertical walls)
- Trim color (often the trim boards around windows and rafters)
- Accent color (front door)
Caution: Some colors and sheens take more coats to look right than others. If you choose a color scheme that requires more coats of paint that we originally bid on, we will be happy to rebid the project for you.
- Potential Exterior Trim and Accent Areas
- Front door
- Back, side and basement doors
- Trim around windows
- Edges of trim boards
- Window sashes (the inset areas around the actual glass panes)
- Decorative and/or porch columns
- Stair balusters, hand rails and caps
- Porch rails
- Porch floor
- Stair treads and risers
- Foundation
- Drip rail just above the foundation
- Rafters
- Rafter tails
- Eaves
- Garage doors
- Sheds and outbuildings
- Decks and fences
Do you want your dog house or your child’s tree house painted to match your house? Let us know before we estimate!
We try to be as thorough as we can in pointing out potential trim and accents when we estimate. The more clarity we can get up front, the happier the job is for everyone.
Interior Paint Projects
A typical three-color interior project has:
- one wall color
- one ceiling color
- one trim color
But even that can get complicated.
- Is the baseboard considered trim?
- The quarter-round against the floor?
- Do you want any hardware painted?
- Do you want the wall above the picture rail in ceiling or wall color?
- Is the fireplace mantel to be painted as trim or an accent?
- What sheens to do you want? Flat? Matte? Eggshell? Satin? Semi-gloss? High gloss?
We will ask many questions as we can to get clarity before we bid your project.
